The Gifts

*warning* sappy, mushy post ahead

Coming down from the Mother's Day weekend high...

Flower planting...

the gift that keeps on giving all summer long.

First campfire of the summer...

complete with hotdogs, s'mores,

an ice cold one,

and sticky fingers.

A beautiful, picture-perfect, not-a-cloud-in-the-sky Mother's Day morning run, and me contemplating how truly lucky I am.

Mother's Day isn't about the gifts for me. I've already received my gifts, in the form of these precious, wonderful, sometimes-I-want-to-pull-my-hair-out little people.

They didn't choose me to be their mom, but I am lucky enough to get to be their mama.

I don't need breakfast in bed, or flowers, or expensive jewelry. I'll take a handmade card over a Hallmark one any day...especially if it has chocolate so carefully taped to it.

My gifts come in the form of hugs and kisses and dandelion bouquets all year long.

Yes, mothers should be celebrated, because sometimes it is the hardest.job.ever.

But children should be celebrated too. They made me their mama; one forever in my heart and four in my arms. Everything happens for a reason, and if it weren't for the one in my heart, I most likely wouldn't have this little beauty in my arms.

Of course, my own mamas need to be celebrated too. One gave birth to me in her womb, the other in her heart. I wrote a tribute to them last Mother's Day. (You can read that here).

Mother's Day is special, but my children are even more special.

I'll take moments like these over gifts any day.

Thanks for making me your mama.

The Legacy

I document; I picture-take; I love for them.

I am the memory keeper.

For simple days; for unexciting, extremely ordinary days; it is here that I end my day.

Looking at my photos.

Remembering the smiles...

or the tantrums.

Sometimes I write about the not-so-great days; when everything is chaos and spilled milk and tears and screaming and I hate yous.

I want to remember those days too.

Time passes too quickly; and didn't I just give birth to this baby boy yesterday?

And her and him and her too?

I write to remember.

The good times, the bad, the birthdays, the lost teeth, the firsts; first bike rides, first soccer games, first, first, first. And I know that in just a short time I will be photographing first dates, first dances, first cars.

I write about running because it is my sanctuary, but my children are home.

I write about things that make me happy, simple things; drawing with chalk, blowing bubbles, sunshine and bare feet.

All of these things are everyday things; nothing spectacular...

just being.

But sometimes, just being; soaking in; marveling at; those are the most special times of all.

Definitely worth remembering.

And that is what I speak for.

Tutus and Tennis Shoes

It's not every day you can pull off an outfit like this one.

Playing dress-up with big sister, and I was jolted back in time to when my big girl used to be my little girl and frequently wore tutus.

So glad I saved this outfit.

So glad I have another little beauty to dance and prance and twirl about in it.

So glad I'm a girl mom as well as a boy mom...best of both worlds.

I can imagine fights when they're teenagers about clothes and shoes and make-up...

or maybe the five years between them will prevent the worst of it...

and little sister will look up to big sister and big sister will help little sister with grace...

just as she does now.

Little sister rocks tutus...

even when wearing tennis shoes.

One Hour a Day

One hour a day, if the weather is right, we go to the park.

Park days are the best days.

The dandelion wish days.

The swing-so-high-you-can-touch-the-sky days.

The roll down the hill,

throw rocks in the lake,

try to catch a butterfly days.

Imaginations run wild and free and there are *hardly* any fights.

Those are good days.
